Superintendent’s Report
BOE Meeting
9/23/08

1. All members of the Board of Education attended the District VIII AASB meeting last night in Decatur. These men and lady became school board members to make a difference for the students in our school district. Their job is difficult with the complex subjects to address including finances, facilities, legal and personnel issues. The Alabama Association of School Boards helps by providing training and information to aide in developing boardmanship skills. As a community, we are appreciative to our Board members for their participation in the AASB School Board Member Academy. They take time away from family and work to improve their knowledge of current educational challenges that they must make decisions on today that can affect the course of our schools for years to come. A thank you is offered to each member for their commitment to Haleyville City Schools. A special recognition is given to Mrs. Manasco for once again meeting the requirements for the “Master’s Honor Roll” for the third year. She has received a Master School Board Member Plaque and she can proudly affix this 2007-2008 date label to it. Congratulations and thank you Haleyville Board of Education members for your service.

2. Once again, a reminder that Fam Jam @ Haleyville Elementary School is scheduled for this Thursday night, September 25, 2008. This program showcases free resources available to assist our students in creating a successful year. Resources include free books for children along with tips on helping with homework, discipline, studying for test, and much more. There will be time to learn about DIBELS, the Alabama Direct Writing Assessment, the Renaissance Program, our Limited English Learners Program, and all Federal Programs. Elementary parents, mark your calendar now for September 25 beginning at 5:30 at the Elementary School.

3. This month’s student community service highlights Victoria Lann, daughter of Keith and Donna Lann. Victoria, a 16 year old junior class student, has been appointed by Senator Richard Shelby to serve in the United States Senate Page Program in Washington, D. C. this fall. She will be in our nation’s capitol until January 23, 2009. Pages play an important role in the daily operation of the Senate. Victoria’s duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Congressional Complex. She also helps prepare the Senate Chamber for sessions, takes messages for Senator Shelby, and carries bills and amendments to the presiding officer. She will continue her basic high school studies while in Washington with classes beginning each morning at 6:15 AM! After class, it is off to the Senate building where she must stay until the conclusion of the day’s business. Regular curfew hours for a Page are 9:00 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10:00 PM on the weekend. Congratulations to Haleyville High School student, Victoria Lann, for this once in a lifetime, prestigious appointment as a United States Senate Page.

4. Kudos to faculty members who go above and beyond the regular requirements of their very demanding jobs. Once such member is Mrs. Miriam Tucker, who is chairperson of our high school safety plan committee. Recently, she advised faculty members from Red Bay High School in the development of a plan for their school. Mrs. Tucker guided this group based on her experience and organization skills in School Safety Planning and Management. This is an example that educators from other schools recognize and have admiration for what is accomplished at Haleyville City Schools, individually and collectively. Good job Mrs. Tucker!

5. We are a community school and could not function without the generosity and support of local businesses. Wal Mart is one such business that deserves a big “thank you.” Mr. Ken Farr, Wal Mart manager, donated two self-propelled lawn mowers to our maintenance department. This is much appreciated and needed additions to our lawn care equipment. We have acres of grass to cut this will assist greatly in keeping our campuses looking neat and trim. Thank you Mr. Ken Farr and Haleyville Wal Mart.

6. This Board held a Work Session earlier at the Albright Administrative Building with all members present. We discussed the construction projects, personnel needs, and other short and long term objectives of our school system. No official business was transacted.

7. The next Regular Session of the Haleyville City Board of Education is scheduled for October 30 here in the Choral Music Room of the high school with a Work Session before. This Thursday night meeting is a change due to a conflict on the regular fourth Tuesday night of October.
